Bell’s V-280 Valor has been proposed for the US Army’s Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft (FLRAA) programme.

The FLRAA programme aims to develop a medium-lift utility rotorcraft replacement.

The capability, with transformational speed, power, and manoeuvrability, will help warfighters counter future multi-domain fights challenges.

The latest contract will see Safran develop a fully integrated landing gear system comprising main landing gear, extension/retraction system, steering system, brake control system, tail landing gear, wheels and brakes, and indication sensors.

Work will be conducted at Safran’s sites in North America and Europe.

According to Safran, the primary management of this programme will be based at the company’s Ajax facility in Ontario, Canada.

Safran Landing Systems Customer Directorate executive vice-president Florence Minisclou said: “Since 2018, we have been a committed supporter of this programme by developing and proposing the state-of-the-art design and analysis for the new V-280. We are glad that our efforts resulted in this collaboration.”

Safran has over eight decades of experience in developing landing gear and braking systems.

Furthermore, it has 38 years of experience in the tiltrotor market through the support offered to Bell’s V-22 Osprey.

Once developed, Bell’s V-280 Valor aircraft will replace the US Army’s UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter.

Last March, Bell Textron secured a contract from the US Army for the competitive demonstration and risk reduction work as part of the FLRAA programme.
