BAE Systems has displayed a Robotic Technology Demonstrator (RTD) vehicle prototype at the ongoing Association of the United States Army’s (AUSA) Annual Meeting and Exposition in the US.

Equipped with autonomous mobility, RTD technology is proposed to provide lethality and improve protection to soldiers.

The demonstrator has the ability to accommodate future weapon systems, sensors and other payloads.

The prototype comprises a Hybrid Electric Drive to provide fuel efficiency, composite rubber track system and a robot to support reconnaissance missions.

In addition, the RTD features a 30mm remote weapons station. A tethered unmanned aerial system and suite of sensors are intended to deliver 360° situational awareness and surveillance capabilities.

BAE Systems Combat Vehicles business development director James Miller said: “The Robotic Technology Demonstrator is designed as a ‘rolling lab’ to integrate emerging autonomy and lethality technologies for testing.

The company stated that the technologies incorporated in the RTD enable long-wave infrared imaging, signal processing and video distribution.

Other companies that have demonstrated robotic combat vehicle prototypes at AUSA 2019 include Rheinmetall, and a team of Textron Systems, FLIR Systems, and Howe & Howe.

Textron unveiled the Ripsaw M5 as its offering for the US Army’s robotic combat vehicle programme.
