Kuwait to boost military capabilities with $10bn additional funds

The Kuwait Ministry of Defence decided to allocate $10bn towards strengthening the country’s military capabilities.

The funds will be used to purchase new fighter jets, tanks and air defence systems, enhancing capabilities of the Kuwaiti Armed Forces over the next ten years.

The move is part of the country’s larger modernisation project, which aims to replace the legacy military weapons currently in use.

American Systems wins part of $6bn intelligence agency contract

American Systems secured part of the $6bn enhanced solutions for the information technology enterprise (E-Site) contract from the US Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA).

Under the indefinite delivery / indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract, the company will provide information technology services to support global partner agencies, including the DIA, the Combatant Commands (CCMDs), and military services.

Lockheed and Leidos agree $5bn IT business deal

Lockheed Martin agreed to separate its Information Systems & Global Solutions (IS&GS) business unit and combine it with US-based defence company Leidos Holdings.

Under the terms of the deal, Lockheed will receive a one-time payment of $1.8bn, while the company’s shareholders will receive approximately 77 million Leidos shares with a projected value of $3.2bn.

The transaction is expected to be completed in the third or fourth quarter of 2016.

Battelle to bid for $900m technical services contract for US JPEO-CBD

Battelle secured a position to bid for a $900m multiple-award contract, which is to provide logistics and services support to the US Department of Defence’s (DoD) Joint Program Executive Office for Chemical and Biological Defense (JPEO-CBD).

Under the terms of the joint enterprise contracted logistics and services support (JE-CLaSS) contract, the company will provide support to seven project managers within JPEO-CBD.

The service include individual and collective protection, decontamination, and information systems, medical devices, drugs and vaccines, installation and force protection systems and demilitarisation programmes.

Iraq requests $800m sale of Hellfire missiles from US

The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) notified Congress of a potential $800m foreign military sale (FMS) of Hellfire missiles to Iraq.

Under the deal, Iraq requested the supply of 5,000 AGM-114K/N/R Hellfire missiles, ten 114K M36E9 captive air training missiles, and associated equipment and defence services.

Lockheed Martin will serve as the principal contractor.

The proposed sale will improve a critical capability of the Iraq Security Forces in defeating ISIS, thereby contributing to US foreign policy and national security goals.

US inaugurate Aegis Ashore site in Romania

The US inaugurated the new Aegis Ashore Phase II radar site and missile battery in a ceremony held in Bucharest, Romania.

The deployment was expected to strengthen security in the Euro-Atlantic area.

US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Europe District and Missile Defense Agency, US Navy and Romanian officials cooperated to complete the $170m missile defence complex.

Obama unveils new executive action to reduce gun violence

US President Barack Obama introduced a new gun control strategy to curb violence in the nation.

More than 30,000 deaths are recorded in the US each year as a result of gun violence, while over 4 million Americans were victims of assaults, robberies, and other gun-related crimes in the last decade.

The new strategy adopted by the US Government recommended strictly organised background checks to be conducted by licensed sellers.

Boeing completes flight test of Ground-based Midcourse Defense system

Boeing successfully completed flight testing of the US Missile Defence Agency’s (MDA) upgraded ground-based midcourse defense (GMD) system at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California.

Carried out by the MDA and industry partners, the test involved a Raytheon-built Exoatmospheric Kill Vehicle (EKV) completing a data-gathering mission.

The test launch aimed to evaluate system components, and increase their ability to destroy ballistic missile threats.

General Dynamics to design cannon for US Army’s Stryker vehicles

The US Department of Defense contracted General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS) to design a 30mm cannon for the Stryker infantry carrier vehicles (ICV).

Valued at $75m, the undefinitised contract will see the company work on eight prototypes that will be mounted on an unmanned turret on the Stryker military vehicles.

Work under the contract was to be carried out at the company’s facility in Sterling Heights, Michigan, and deliveries were expected to be completed by January 2021.

Raytheon to support Darpa’s research to improve infantry squad safety

The US Department of Defense contracted Raytheon to support the Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency’s (Darpa) Squad X Core Technologies (SXCT) programme.

Valued at $2.5m, the phase one contract required Raytheon to develop new technologies to enhance the efficacy and security of infantry squads.

Darpa’s SXCT programme aimed to accelerate the development of lightweight, integrated systems to give infantry squads greater awareness, adaptability and flexibility in complex environments.
