British Army poised to buy 500 Boxers MIVs

The British Army confirmed that the contract to buy the Boxer MIV was signed.

On Twitter, the British Army said: “Contract signed! We have committed to purchase more than 500 Boxer Mechanised Infantry Vehicles. British Boxer will deliver a battle-winning, transformational capability which will form the backbone of STRIKE and is key in transforming the British Army.”

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said: “Our men and women of the armed forces deserve to have the best equipment to do their job. The Boxer vehicle is a leader in its field and I look forward to it arriving in units from 2023.”

The £2.8bn contract secures the purchase of over 500 vehicles just before the start of the pre-election period. The British Army is set to receive a mix of Boxer variants, including troop-carriers, ambulances, command vehicles and ‘specialist designs to carry military equipment’.


UAE launches defence conglomerate

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) founded technology company EDGE to strengthen its footing in national security and defence.

The Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan inaugurated the company, which brings together more than 25 different Emirati entities.

GDLS to produce robotic mules for US Army soldiers

General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS) received a $162.4m contract from the US Army to produce 624 small multipurpose equipment transport (S-MET) units to reduce soldier loads.

The S-MET programme is designed to procure a robotic ‘mule’ capability for infantry brigade combat teams (IBCT).

Deliveries under the contract will start in the second quarter of 2021.


Rolls-Royce wins $1.2bn US defence services contract

British engineering company Rolls-Royce has won a $1.2bn five-year MissionCare contract for the maintenance of AE 1107C engines on US Marine Corps, US Navy and US Air Force V-22 aircraft.

Under the MissionCare contract, the company will be responsible for propulsion system support on a ‘power by the hour’ basis.

The company said that Rolls-Royce AE 1107C engines are assembled at the company’s largest facility in Indianapolis, US.


Northrop Grumman to support US Army’s IAMD Battle Command System

American aerospace and defence technology company Northrop Grumman won a $60.6m contract from the US Army to continue work on the Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) Battle Command System (IBCS) programme.

The company’s IAMD IBCS integrates available sensors to increase survivability by eliminating vectors of attack and expanding the area of protection.

Under the contract, Northrop Grumman will continue to support engineering, logistics, integration, test and evaluation, training and programme management as IBCS goes through the design and development phase to prepare for fielding.


Lithuania signs agreement to purchase 200 JLTVs from US

The Defence Materiel Agency under the Ministry of National Defence of Lithuania and the US Department of Defense signed a letter of offer and acceptance for the procurement of 200 Joint Light Tactical Vehicles (JLTVs).

The new vehicles are expected to strengthen the capabilities of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, provide greater mobility, personnel protection and combat power. Lithuania will buy the JLTVs from the US Government.

Lithuania Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis said: “The combat support JLTV acquisition project, which is implemented in cooperation with the United States Government, is one of the key elements in modernising and strengthening the Lithuanian Armed Forces and marks a qualitative leap in providing the armed forces with cutting-edge, combat-capable equipment.”


Lockheed to produce two SPY-7 radar sets for Aegis Ashore Japan

Lockheed Martin and its Japanese trading partner received a contract to produce two solid-state radar (SSR) antenna sets for Japan’s Aegis Ashore land-based missile system.

The contract was awarded by the Japanese Ministry of Defence and comes after the US Government recently designated Lockheed Martin’s SSR as AN/SPY-7(V)1.

When combined with the Aegis Ashore system, the SPY-7 radar will provide continuous protection to Japan against the threat of ballistic missiles.


Saab and Raytheon complete Guided Carl-Gustaf Munition test firings

Saab and Raytheon completed test firings of Guided Carl-Gustaf Munition, marking another milestone in the laser-guided system’s transition to production.

The companies conducted a series of guided flight tests for the shoulder-fired weapon system at Saab’s Bofors Test Centre in Sweden and the Mile High Range in the US.

Equipped with a semi-active laser guidance system, the Guided Carl-Gustaf Munition performed in line with expectations in 11 flight tests, Raytheon said.


Kongsberg to provide mobile ground-based air defence system to Norway

Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace received a contract to supply a mobile ground-based air defence system to the Norwegian Army.

The contract is valued at Nkr583m ($64.04m) and was awarded by the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency.

The Norwegian Defence Ministry and Kongsberg agreed to a direct acquisition process for the army mobile ground-based air defence system in February 2017.


UK MoD funds projects to develop counter-drone capabilities

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) funded 18 projects to foster the development of new technology to counter hostile drone threats.

The Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA) has awarded contracts to several companies to address the future threats of unmanned aerial systems (UAS).

Made available through competition, the nearly £2m of funding will help detect, disrupt and defeat hostile drones.
