Notably, the number of environmental sustainability-related patent applications in the aerospace, defence & security industry was 1,423 in Q3 2023, versus 2,794 in the prior quarter.

The top five companies accounted for 31% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that General Electric filed the most environmental sustainability patents within the aerospace, defence & security industry in Q3 2023. The company filed 132 environmental sustainability-related patents in the quarter, compared with 114 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Safran with 112 environmental sustainability patent filings, RTX (93 filings), and Rolls-Royce (60 filings) in Q3 2023.

Patenting activity was driven by China with a 28% share of total patent filings

The largest share of environmental sustainability related patent filings in the aerospace, defence & security industry in Q3 2023 was in China with 28%, followed by the US (27%) and Japan (6%). The share represented by China was 20% lower than the 48% share it accounted for in Q2 2023.
