Software for military vehicle control
The OpenECU system is based on a range of commercial off the shelf (COTS) production proven, ruggedised electronic control units (ECUs) engineered to rigorous automotive and military production standards. These ECUs can be used to create prototype control systems that can withstand the rigours of extensive field testing.
The standard OpenECU units can also be directly used in production or used as the basis for rapidly creating custom products that are optimised for lifetime cost, taking into account issues such as potential component obsolescence.
The OpenECU hardware is fully supported with a range of system-level software development tools and proven software modules for standard applications, such as combustion engine control. The system-level nature of these tools enables the application of electronic control to systems without the need for extensive electronics engineering expertise.

ITAR-compliant electronic control equipment for military vehicles
The Pi Shurlok defence division has design centres in the US and UK with operational processes that are fully compliant with US International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and similar regulations in other countries. Our engineering teams can design and rapidly prototype new systems using our own field-ready OpenECU technology.

Body and chassis control systems for military vehicles
Pi Shurlok has 25 years’ experience of working on vehicle chassis control systems in applications as diverse as motorsport and heavy off-road vehicles. In the military sector vehicles with Pi Shurlok designed chassis control systems have been field proven up to TRL8 and in use for more than five years. The specific military applications include active suspension, chassis stability, chassis levelling and ride height control. Body control systems encompass an extremely wide range of environmental and motorised sub-systems on specialist vehicles.
Powertrain systems for military vehicles
Pi Shurlok powertrain expertise covers control for engines, transmission and emissions, as applied to spark and injection systems on gasoline, diesel and JP fuelled engines. Work on specialised powertrains has included gasoline hybrid-electric and fuel-cell hybrid-electric technologies with control of associated energy storage systems.
These advanced technologies are being applied to single cylinder motorcycle engines through to heavy-duty 12-cylinder engines and in specialist, lightweight power systems for UGVs and UAVs.
Instrument packs for military vehicles
Pi Shurlok designs and manufactures all aspects of instrument packs, including hardware, software, mechanical, illumination and visual aesthetics using dedicated design and testing packages. Robust, high reliability technologies are available or designs can incorporate state-of-the-art display technologies such as, electroluminescence (EL), liquid crystal (LCD) and thin film transfer (TFT).
Military vehicle diagnostics, prognostics, and logistics
Pi Shurlok understands the future requirements of military mission planners, logisticians, and field repair crews to increase the availability, or mean time between repair (MTBR) of systems in the field. We have real-world experience both from our commercial and military customers of developing diagnostics able to predict the future state of sensors, actuators and the complex systems within which they operate to support intelligent predictive field maintenance.
