The US Army’s 5th Battalion, 4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment (5-4 ADA) has become the first battalion in the service to field the Stryker-based Mobile Short-Range Air Defense (M-SHORAD) system.

The latest defence capability is an addition to the US Army’s efforts to revitalise and update the service’s air and missile defence forces and systems.

5-4 ADA is a unit under the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command (AAMDC), which serves as the executive agent of US Army Europe and Africa. The 10th AAMDC is responsible for all theatre air and missile defence operations and force management.

According to the US Army, the M-SHORAD is a Stryker A1 combat vehicle-based system that combines the existing guns, missiles, rockets and sensors.

It is designed to provide stronger defence against unmanned aircraft systems (UASs), rotary-wing and residual fixed-wing threats.

10th AAMDC commander brigadier general Gregory Brady said: “This is truly a testament to our Army’s commitment to increase air and missile defence capability and capacity to the joint force, especially here in Europe.

“Just under three years ago, 5-4 ADA was the Army’s first SHORAD battalion activated in almost 13 years. It is now proud again to be the first to lead the Army’s Air and Missile Defense modernisation initiatives with M-SHORAD.

“The 10th AAMDC is proud to be a part of this Team effort and remains engaged, postured and ready to assure, deter and defend the manoeuvre force in an increasingly complex Integrated Air and Missile Defense environment, shoulder to shoulder with our Nato allies.”

The 5th Battalion unit initially received four systems this month and will receive more later this year.
