The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified Congress of a potential foreign military sale (FMS) of mine-resistant ambush-protected (MRAP) vehicles and related equipment to Pakistan.

Under the estimated $198m sale, Pakistan has requested 160 Navistar MRAP vehicles, including 110 MaxxPro Dash DXM, 30 MaxxPro Base DXM and ten MaxxPro Dash DXM ambulances, as well as ten MaxxPro recovery vehicles with protection kits.

"The sale is expected to ensure that Pakistan can effectively operate in hazardous areas."

A lighter and more mobile variant of the MaxxPro MRAP family, the MaxxPro Dash is designed to withstand ballistic arms fire, mine blasts and improvised explosive devices (IEDs), as well as other emerging threats on the battlefield.

The package includes spare and repair parts, support and test equipment, publications and technical documentation, personnel and equipment training, technical and logistics support services, as well as other related elements of logistical and programme support.

Approved by the US State Department, the sale is expected to ensure that Pakistan can effectively operate in hazardous areas in a safe, enhanced survivability vehicle, while improving the country’s interoperability with US forces.

Specifically, the sale will enable Pakistan to provide the same level of protection for its own forces as provided by the US to its forces.

The Pakistani military already possesses MRAP vehicles and has successfully demonstrated the ability to operate and maintain the vehicles in counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations.

The sale also contributes to the foreign policy and national security of the US by helping to enhance the security of a country vital to US foreign policy and national security goals in South Asia.

Navistar Defense has been named as prime contractor for the FMS programme.
