L-3 Communications has been selected to supply electro-optical and infrared designating systems to an undisclosed Middle Eastern nation’s Ministry of Defense.

The company’s integrated sensor systems (ISS) sector will deliver eight WESCAM MX-10D electro-optical and infrared (EO/IR) designating turrets, under a US foreign military sales contract.

The customer will use the MX-10Ds to support counter-terrorism operations from its newly acquired UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters.

"We are proud to provide our end user with a powerful and affordable designating solution."

L-3 ISS sector WESCAM government sales and business development vice-president Paul Jennison said: “We are proud to provide our end user with a powerful and affordable designating solution that will work in conjunction with legacy systems to deliver a unique and essential integrated EO/IR system.”

Ranging in size between 8in and 25in in diameter, L-3’s imaging systems are said to provide high-resolution, stabilised full-motion intelligence for operations.

The MX-10Ds are configured with a series of high-sensitivity, multi-spectral sensors that enable precise engagement from tactical ranges during daylight, low-light and night-time missions.

The sensors include a four field-of-view thermal imager, and daylight and low-light continuous zoom TVs, as well as advanced laser designator, rangefinder and illuminator technologies.

Deliveries of turret under the contract will be completed by the end of February 2017.

Sikorsky is the integrator for the programme, L-3 said in a statement.
