India and China are planning to conduct a joint military exercise in 2012, a top Indian Army official revealed.

The scope of the joint exercise, along with other details such as date and location, will be discussed in the annual defence consultative talks that will be held next month.

The exercise, if finalised, will be the first to take place in four years due to strained bilateral exchanges between the two nations.

Bilateral military exchanges resumed in April this year and the exercise will be part of the annual programmes.

The first bilateral exercise between the nations was held in December 2007.
