The US Department of Defense’s (DoD) High Energy Laser Joint Technology Office (HEL-JTO) has awarded a contract to Boeing to continue developing the high-power adaptive optic system prototype.

Under the contract, Boeing, in partnership with SAIC, will test the system with the high-energy laser technology demonstrator (HEL TD).

The lightweight, ultra-high-speed system features state-of-the-art processing and sensor technologies and is aimed at enhancing both the range and power of tactical laser weapons.

The system has recently completed designing, building and testing in a laboratory environment, marking the end of the first phase of its development.

The value of the 15-month contract has not been disclosed.
