India plans to purchase 139 military helicopters worth €1.5bn ($1.9bn) from Russian arms exporter Rosoboronexport.

India and Russia signed a deal in 2008 for the delivery of 80 Mi-17 helicopters, and the Indian Government has now ordered an additional 59 aircraft.

The Mi-17 helicopters would be used for transport and in combat missions, according to Monsters and Critics.

India is in the process of modernising its military hardware and has ordered two aircraft carriers and a nuclear submarine from Moscow.

The two countries will also develop a military transport plane under a recently signed joint agreement.
