The Indian Army’s T-72 tank fleet is to be modernised, instead of being completely terminated upon completion of their life span, Defence Minister A K Antony has said.

“The army intends to retrofit / upgrade these tanks (T-72) to enhance their mission reliability and life expectancy,” Antony confirmed.

The army recently placed an order to acquire 124 indigenously built Arjun main battle tanks (MBTs) and has received 85 Arjun MBTs to date, according to Brahmand.

The Russian-built T-72 tanks were acquired from Russia over 30 years ago and 1,600 tanks are currently operated by the Indian Army.
