The Armenian National Security Council (NSC) has confirmed the extension of the Russian military base in Armenia.

The 102nd Russian military base, located in Armenia since 1995, has been extended following agreements in December 2005 on the division of the Soviet-era Red Banner South Caucasus Military District.

NSC Secretary Artur Bagdasaryan said the Russian army base will remain in armenia for at least another 49 years, instead of 25 years, with the possible prolongation of the term.

He said Russia’s extended military presence would ensure Armenia’s security, with the help of Armenian armed forces.

“We have agreements with our Russian counterparts on joint work on a package on the development of the border security concept and the modernisation of border infrastructure,” Bagdasaryan said.
