Griffon Aerospace has unveiled the first production variant of the MQM-171A BroadSword unmanned aircraft system – target (UAS-T) for the US Army.

BroadSword, an unmanned air vehicle weighing 500lb with a 17ft wingspan, can carry a variety of payloads and support testing of developmental weapon systems, according to forecastinternational.com.

In August 2009, US Army Aviation and Missile Command awarded a five-year contract to Griffon to manufacture the MQM-171A target system, and provide engineering and maintenance services for the BroadSword system.

This low-cost lightweight aircraft will be used by the army as an observation platform or a test / development vehicle for sensors and new propulsion systems.

BroadSword supports a wide range of repeatable flight patterns by incorporating a programmable autopilot. It can be used as a reliable airframe to support rapid development of emerging sensor / UAV payloads.
