A new Cyber Security Operations Centre has been established by the Australian Defence Department to tackle computer attacks against the country.

The centre, which will employ around 130 IT experts, engineers and analysts, will develop Australia’s cyberspace capabilities and work on increasing understanding of threats and attacks.

Australian Defence Minister John Faulkner said cyber attacks on the government and critical infrastructure are a threat to Australia’s national interest.

“Cyber security is one of the government’s top national security priorities and the Cyber Security Operations Centre is a key part of a national cyber security initiative,” Faulkner said.
