Northrop to Provide Precision Pointing Technology

03 November 2009

The US Army has selected Northrop Grumman to provide the precision pointing concept for the army's far target location improvement programme.

Under the contract, the company will develop a lightweight, low-power precision pointing technology demonstrator based on its milli-hemispherical resonator gyroscope (mHRG).

The technology will provide enhanced target accuracy and performance over the currently fielded far target locators to deliver artillery far more accurately to reduce collateral damage in the field.

The mHRG is a small and high-performance sensor, which allows the precision pointing system to be ten to 20 times more accurate than existing systems.

The first phase of the programme calls for preliminary design, analysis and modelling of the mHRG and its system implementation, while the second will include the development, fabrication, test and delivery of two precision pointing units.
