US Army Opts for Pyrotechnic Communications

27 October 2009

The US Army has awarded a contract to Bulova Technologies for the provision of pyrotechnics to be used for communication, illumination, training and protection.

The pyrotechnic devices will relay prearranged signals based on their colour and characteristics to signal large numbers of troops quickly across a large area.

The devices can be used for friendly unit identification, manoeuvre element control, fire support control, target marking and location reports.

The types of pyrotechnics commonly used by the military are hand-held signal rockets and ground smoke grenades.

The contract, worth up to $41.2m, has been awarded by the US Army Materiel Command.
