The US Army has selected Aerojet to eliminate submunitions for the army's guided multiple launched rocket system alternate warhead programme (GMLRS AWP).
The GMLRS AWP is intended to replace the GMLRS dual-purpose improved conventional munition (DPICM) warhead with a new alternative warhead after the US government banned submunitions that may leave hazardous unexploded ordnance.
The company will support an alternative warhead (AW) integration and demonstration phase that includes the warhead fabrication and integration with the GMLRS as well as flight testing of the rocket.
Under the 17-month demonstration phase, the company will evaluate three technologies to determine the lowest-risk and determine the most-effective warhead to replace the DPICM system and eliminate unexploded ordnance.
The programme management, design and engineering analysis of the selected technology was carried out at the company's facility in California, while the advanced material procurement and load assembly was performed at Aerojet's facilities in Tennessee and Arkansas.
