US company iRobot Corp has received an order for its PackBot 510 robots in a $17.5m deal from the US Army.

The PackBot 510 is designed to investigate suspicious objects, identify roadside bombs and other explosives as well as uncover exploded ordnance.

The PackBot 510 is a new generation of iRobot design with an overall speed increase of 30%. It is capable of travelling over rough terrain at speeds of up to 5.6 miles an hour and of climbing gradients of up to 60°.

Capable of carrying loads of up to 30lb, the robot is able to support interchangeable, modular payload capabilities that can address specific missions.

President of iRobot Government and Industrial Robots Joe Dyer said the robots will continue to support soldiers in theatre as unmanned systems increase critical mission effectiveness.
