The US Navy has awarded Lockheed Martin a US$197.1m contract for an early batch of F-35 Joint Strike Fighter aircraft for the US and UK.

The US Department of Defense says the contract covers "long lead" materials for eight conventional take-off and landing aircraft for the US Air Force, eight short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) aircraft for the marine corps, and two STOVL aircraft for the UK, Reuters reports.

The F-35 programme covers the development of three versions for the air force, marine corps and navy, as well as for co-production partners and export sales.
