UK MoD Approves New Combat Boot Designs

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has approved two new boot designs for use by frontline troops.

After testing 22 boot designs, the MoD has approved Meindl and Lowa heavy-duty desert boots, which it says are easier to break-in than traditional leather boots.

The footwear is capable of withstanding temperatures up to 50°C, handles varied terrain from abrasive stony ground to desert sands and supports the wearer's foot when carrying heavy loads.

A variety of the Lowa boot designed specifically for women will be available for the first time.

Previously, female troops wore shoes designed for men, which are often too wide at the heel.
