Lockheed Martin has received a US$512m contract to provide the US Army and Marine Corps with the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) and the Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS).

HIMARS, which can be deployed into areas previously inaccessible to heavier launchers due to it C-130 transportability, can accommodate all variants of MLRS munitions.

It was designed to engage and defeat artillery, air defence concentrations, trucks, light armour and personnel carriers Lockheed says.

GMLRS is an all-weather, precision strike artillery rocket system that achieves greater range and precision accuracy therefore requiring fewer rockets to defeat targets.

Delivery of the equipment is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2010.

Specific quantities of vehicles and rockets were not disclosed.
