India has announced its missile shield could be ready in three years.
India is currently developing the Agni-IV ballistic missile, with a range of up to 6,000km, and plans to conduct three more tests of its Agni-III missile, which has a range of up to 3,000 km, over the next twelve months, according to local media reports.
Defence Research Development Organisation chief controller for research and development of missiles and strategic systems Dr V K Saraswat says the Agni-IV is still at the design stage, but the first trials are expected to take place in 2010.
Saraswat says the two-layered ballistic missile defence system, designed to deal with threats from both ballistic missiles and terrain-hugging cruise missiles, could be ready by 2010.
