British company Satmap Systems has unveiled new handheld mapping technology which combines GPS systems to allow users to see their exact position on a real map or reconnaissance photographic image.
The Satmap 10MX displays high quality 'raster' topographical maps which are stored on SD cards, meaning the system can be operated without input from a PC.
Maps can be displayed with overlays and geo-referenced JPEG, MPEG, text or audio files to provide supplementary data.
Satmap says the 10MX can be used in almost any weather, supports a multi-language interface and also features connections for various data inputs and radio communications systems.
Satmap Systems managing director Richard Calthorp-Owen says the Satmap 10MX offers users a lightweight, robust and secure handheld GPS map system.
"Reading maps in unfamiliar countries under pressure or under fire can lead to mistakes which can impact the success of a mission," Calthorp-Owen says.
"We are delighted to be launching our GPS solutions for military and services personnel and believe this will make a real difference in the field."
