The Indian Government has signed defence contracts worth Rs371bn ($8bn) with the US between 2004-2011 under capital acquisition in the defence sector, Defence Minister AK Antony said.

“Contracts have been signed for purchase of various defence equipment including C130-J transport aircraft, VVIP Boeing, Harpoon missiles, sensor fused weapons, C-17 Globemaster III, INS Jalashwa, P-81 LRMR aircraft from the US during 2004-11,” he added.

Most of the procurement of defence-related items from the US has been made through various indigenous and foreign sources in agreement with the defence procurement procedure.

The minister also confirmed that the letter of offer and acceptance (LOA) for the procurement of ten C-17 Globemaster-III aircraft, along with associated equipment, was signed on 14 June 2011.

The delivery of the $4.1bn aircraft will begin from June 2013 and is expected to be completed by June 2015.
