The UK and Russia have plans to expand bilateral military cooperation in an effort to stabilise the situation in Afghanistan, Russian chief of general staff General Nikolai Makarov has said.
“We had a close look at the reasons that prevented us from developing bilateral ties the way we wanted them to be … and how we can bring our cooperation to a new level,” he added.

UK counterpart General David Richards also confirmed the plans, which would be renewed after a long period of strained relations between the two nations, RIA Novosti reported.
Russia has greatly contributed to the Nato war effort in Afghanistan through improved transit and supply routes for coalition forces and the deliveries of small arms and ammunition to the Afghan police.
The country has also supplied Mi-17 helicopters and crews to train Afghan pilots, assisted in training Afghan national security forces, and increased cooperation on counter-narcotics and border security.
