The UK Government is set to announce another round of personnel cuts as part of a radical overhaul of the armed forces.

Defence Secretary Dr Liam Fox will confirm the reductions today on the use of the Territorial Army, as 17,000 regular soldiers are likely to be axed from service.

The British Army will be reduced from 101,000 to 82,000 by 2020, cuts equivalent to scrapping five battalions.

The use of reservists is based on a model used in the US and Australia.

The UK is planning to replace the soldiers on the front line by part-time reservists to save money.

The proposed changes follow concerns expressed by MPs over drawdown of troops from Afghanistan by 2014, which they say could endanger soldiers from the UK still on the ground.
