Cassidian has signed a multi-million euro contract with Korean Aircraft Industries to deliver the AN/AAR-60 Missile Launch Detection System for use in Korean Army utility helicopters.

The sensors will protect the Surion utility helicopter against missile attacks by detecting the UV radiation signature of the approaching missiles.

The passive imaging sensor features extremely high resolution combined with rapid processing for reliable threat identification and virtual elimination of false alarms.

Cassidian Electronics CEO Bernd Wenzler said that the sensor has become a standard missile warner in protecting air vehicles, particularly against infrared-guided shoulder-fired missiles.

The Korean Army is planning to procure 250 Surion helicopters, which are developed jointly by Korean Aerospace Industries and Eurocopter.

The contract calls for delivery of 100 sensors, with the first batch of 24 to be delivered until 2013.
