BAE Systems has been awarded a contract to provide thermal weapon sights to the US Army for improved situational awareness and survivability of soldiers on the battlefield.

Under the $56m contract, the company will continue producing the light, medium and heavy variants of the thermal sights for use on individual and crew-served weapons.

The thermal sights incorporate MicroIR uncooled infrared sensor technology for superior infrared imagery without the need for cryogenic cooling equipment.

The second-generation thermal sights provide day / night imagery during all weather conditions to detect, observe and engage the enemy on the battlefield.

About 94,000 sights have been delivered to date to support operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
