Russia and Nato are planning to restart joint theatre missile defence drills in early 2012, Nato Information Office head Robert Pszczel has said.

“The alliance and Russia have decided to return to cooperation … including theatre missile defence [cooperation]. We will hold special drills in this sphere starting early next year,” he added.

The joint theatre missile defence drills were halted in August 2008 due to Russia’s involvement in a five-day war with Georgia.

During a Nato-Russia Council summit in November 2010, Nato officially invited Russia to resume the exercises and to cooperate with the construction of a European missile defence system.

Both parties are also planning to conduct Bold Monarch military exercises in the Mediterranean Sea, according to RIA Novosti.
