The US Army has awarded a contract to General Dynamics C4 Systems to provide a prototype handheld battle command capability as part of the Army Joint Battle Command – Platform (JBC-P) handheld programme.

The 8oz GD300 rugged prototype device will enable unprecedented network connectivity and increased command, control and situational awareness for dismounted soldiers and marines.

The GD300 also delivers position location information and access to popular military software ‘apps’ like the tactical intelligence ground reporting (TIGR) system.

Work will be carried out in Indiana and Arizona, US, with Iridium LLC to serve as GD’s JBC-P HBC team member.

The company expects to deliver 40 prototype handheld devices for user evaluation and feedback with initial deliveries scheduled for September 2011.

About 250 JBC-P interoperable handheld devices could be purchased as part a contract option during the second phase of the programme.
