The German Federal Office of Defense Technology and Procurement has awarded GD European Land Systems a contract for 195 highly protected Eagle vehicles.

The $165m contract will increase the German Army’s Eagle fleet to 473 vehicles, which will replace existing unprotected and lightly protected Federal Defense Force vehicles on foreign missions.

The 5.4m-long Eagle has a height of 2.4m, width of 2.16m and can reach a top speed of 110km/h while equipped with an NBC overpressure system.

The vehicle’s modular protection system provides advanced protection against ballistic threats, mines and IEDs.

Work will be jointly carried out by GD Land Systems in Switzerland and Germany, with many key components being manufactured and supplied by German suppliers.

As per the terms of the contract, the vehicles are scheduled to be manufactured and delivered within 2011 and 2012.
