The five-year plan to modernise Armenia’s armed forces, which foresees the acquisition of long-range precision-guided weapons has been approved by President Serzh Sarkisian and the National Security Council.

The state programme of developing weaponry and military hardware in 2011-2015 said the Armenian military would receive state-of-the-art weapons.

The modernisation plan is based on two documents, one dealing with army weaponry, while the other detailed measures to develop the Armenian defence industry.

Armenia’s Defence Minister Seyran Ohanian said the programme would enhance the army’s long-range strike capacity to prevent enemy movements deep inside the entire theatre of hostilities.

The Armenian military is already equipped with short-range tactical missiles capable of striking military and civilian targets in Azerbaijan.

The Armenian defence budget for 2011 is projected at $405m, according to Azatutyun.am.
