Saab has been awarded a contract to supply the Robotsystem (RBS) 70 very-short-range air defence system (VSHORAD) for the Brazilian Army.

The deal will see the delivery of an undisclosed number of RBS 70 man-portable launchers, as well as training simulators, camouflage systems and associated equipment for operators and maintenance personnel.

The RBS 70 systems and related auxiliary equipment are currently slated for delivery between 2018 and 2019.

Saab Dynamics business area head and senior vice-president Görgen Johansson said: “The overall market for short-range air defence systems is growing and we see an increasing demand from Brazil and other customers around the world.

“Not only for our man-portable system, but also for our new Mobile SHORAD solution that we introduced at Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI) in London this year.”

The equipment is intended to strengthen the country’s air defence capability, and the latest contract represents the third order placed by Brazil for RBS 70 VSHORAD systems in recent years.

It was also used to protect the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Saab’s portfolio of short-range ground based air defence missile systems comprises the RBS 70 and the further-enhanced RBS 70 NG.

A total of 19 countries have procured more than 1,600 RBS 70 systems to date, including more than 18,000 missiles.

The RBS 70 was originally designed and manufactured by Saab Bofors Dynamics.

The system comprises a tripod firing stand, optical sight and the missile in a launch container, which can be operated independently in stand-alone mode or configured with several firing units linked with a surveillance radar to form an anti-aircraft battery.
