Turkey-US Defense Cooperation: Prospects and Challenges

30 January 2012

US Congress and the Obama administration are seeking to manage longstanding bilateral and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (Nato)-based defence cooperation with Turkey, at a time when a more independent Turkish foreign policy course, and changes in regional security conditions, are creating new challenges for both countries.

The report provides an overview of defence cooperation, Turkey's importance to US National Security, the military's changing role in Turkish Society, major defence areas of cooperation and possible US policy approaches.

The report also raises specific issues and possible options for Congress, including access to Turkish bases and transport corridors, reaction to the downturn in Turkey-Israel relations, missile defense radar and Nato, arms sales and industrial cooperation, military and security assistance, plus monitoring Turkey's joint military activities.
