The proliferation security initiative (PSI)

06 January 2012

The proliferation security initiative (PSI) was formed to increase international cooperation in interdicting shipments of weapons of mass destruction (WMD), their delivery systems and related materials.

This report provides background information on the initiative, the participating member nations and other organisations supporting the initiative, the number of interdictions successfully carried out as a result of PSI countries' cooperation, PSI's objectives and methods, national legal authorities and international law and frameworks.

The report also raises potential issues for the Congress to strengthen and expand PSI by establishing a clear authority for coordination and increasing PSI cooperation with all countries.
