Grant read War and Security Studies at the University of Hull's Department of Politics and International Studies. His research areas included British defence policy since 1945, counterterrorism and counterinsurgency, defence equipment procurement and UK civil-military relations.
This academic background has been supplemented with work in the British Army as a Territorial Army soldier. Grant completed his infantryman course at the prestigious Infantry Training Centre Catterick in 2008 and has since been deployed to the Falkland Islands and as Venue Security at the London Olympics Games.
Grant's other experience includes working as an editorial assistant for a major defence think-tank in London.
