About Mack Trucks and the military

Equipped with up to a 70" (178 cm) high-rise sleeper, the Vision Elite Series tractor is an ideal candidate for a variety of supply duties.
The Mack Granite Line-Haul Replacement Tractor (LHRT) now offers an extended cab for additional survivability in the most extreme environments.
The rugged Mack MP8 13 liter diesel engine is available in ratings up to 525 HP (390 kW) and is compatible with NATO/JP8 fluids.
Using an 11 liter Mack MP7 as a base engine, the hybrid electric powertrain features an integrated starter, alternator, and motor, improving fuel economy by 20%.

Since 1917, Mack has been a trusted partner of the United States Armed Forces and their campaigns. Beginning in WWI, over 6,000 Mack AC Model trucks were produced and delivered to Allied Forces where they performed at legendary levels. It was there on the fields of war where British soldiers first dubbed our truck the ‘Bulldog Mack’. Its pugnacious, blunt-nosed hood, coupled with its incredible durability reminded the soldiers of the tenacious qualities of their country’s mascot, the English Bulldog.

For nearly 100 years now, the United States Military has trusted our trucks for their dependability, durability and serviceability. Today, with a renewed commitment to our armed forces, Mack presents the next-generation in military hybrid and line-haul replacement trucks.

Military specific line-haul replacement tractor (LHRT)

In 2006 Mack partnered with VSE Corporation and Forschler and Associates to collectively transform our Granite heavy duty construction truck into the next-generation in military line-haul, the Granite LHRT. With advanced armor capability and a powerful 13 liter MP8 engine rated at 525 horsepower, the Granite LHRT is built to ensure mission critical supplies reach the front line while providing the ultimate in survivability for its occupants.

Our MP8 engine is certified to Euro III emission standards without any use of aftertreatment technology. In addition to typical Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) the MP8 engine has been optimized to accept JP8 fuel. Mack has designed the MP8 to handle the most severe duty cycles with a high efficiency cooling system that keeps heat rejection to a minimum.

Hybrid electric vehicles

Mack Trucks, Inc. recently reached another important milestone in the development of clean and efficient trucks with the delivery of the first diesel-electric hybrid refuse truck to the United States Air Force (USAF) Advanced Power Technology Office (APTO). Several hybrid-electric trucks have already been delivered to the USAF and are in operation across the country. Several additional units have also been contracted to various branches of the armed forces for delivery in the near future.

Using a production Mack MP7 as a base engine, the hybrid electric powertrain used in the truck features an integrated starter, alternator, and motor that assists the MP7 in providing torque to the wheels and regenerates energy during braking. The energy captured during braking is then used in place of diesel fuel and helps launch the truck from stops. The use of this hybrid system is expected to improve fuel economy by 20-30% and provide a similar benefit on greenhouse emissions, while reducing cost of maintenance.
