Marshall Shows New Vehicles at DVD 2009: Gun Towing Vehicle and Tail Lift Vehicle Provide Centrepiece

Thursday, June 18, 2009 by Marshall SDG: a Marshall Land Systems Company

Marshall Land Systems is using DVD, the defence exhibition focused on equipment and support for the UK's armed forces, to display two new support solutions for the first time, together with its range of capabilities in protected logistics, protected workspaces and capability management.

At the front of the display on stand SP6, the Cambridge-based company will show an example of how it has taken its knowledge of load beds, chassis dynamics and systems integration to demonstrate how an in-service chassis can be put to different uses. Featured is one of the possibilities, a new gun towing vehicle. Others include radar towing vehicles or mobile command centres.

This new vehicle, which has been developed as a private venture, is based on the 6t MAN HX60 support vehicle, which is entering service with British forces, although the capability could equally apply to the 9t and 15t variants. It carries a detachment of eight together with two 1.86t NATO ammunition pallets and is fitted with a crane. The load bed has been configured to accommodate the human factor requirements for a prime mover, allowing it to tow guns, radars or similar.

The recently announced tail lift variant of the UK's support vehicle fleet is also on public show for the first time. The cantilever design has a lift capability of 750kg with significant growth margin and has been designed to minimise the impact on cross-country mobility and fording ability while providing protection against hostile environments.

The company's capabilities in unmanned ground vehicles will also be on display. These include the Grand Challenge winning, tracked Saturn vehicle and the wheeled Sentry lightweight, Class I RFI vehicle, capable of delivering very high or very low payloads.

At the rear of the stand are two shelters. The first of these is a camp infrastructures shelter from Marshall's Norwegian partners, CSI. This includes an ablution segment and a separate catering facility. The second shelter is a three-in-one Matrix expandable shelter that houses a display showing the company's complete range of solutions.

Marshall Land Systems is also participating in the MoD's direct support and test equipment project team's (DS&ET PT) display with the deployable machine shop (DMS) and the power pack repair facility (PPRF). The DMS provides facilities for engineers to carry out front-line support milling, turning and finishing of electrical parts and servicing of much of the complex equipment now in service. The PPRF is a shelter-based workshop with facilities for repairing and servicing Challenger 2, Warrior and AS90 power packs.

DVD will be held at the Millbrook Proving Ground, near Bedford, on the 24 June and 25 June.
