Marshall Specialist Vehicles - Unattended Air Vehicles and Unattended Ground Vehicles

Modern conflict requires workspaces and logistic areas, including hospitals and medical systems, are protected against EMP, EMC, EMI, IEDs and CBRN as well as blast, fragments and bullets and climatic and environmental challenges. MSV military and security vehicles and protective shelters cover three primary areas: protected workspace - mainly integrated vehicle and ground based shelters, protected logistics - mainly specialist vehicles and load beds - and capability development including consulting, robotics - UORs, Unattended Ground Vehicles, UAVs and EOD.

Unattended Ground Vehicles

Although Unattended Ground Vehicles have traditionally been used for EOD purposes, they are increasingly becoming more capable. MSV has been active in providing Unattended Ground Vehicles for EOD purposes for many years. A range of Unattended Ground Vehicles covering small tracked robotic vehicles to remotely controlled diggers have been designed and developed for bomb disposal purposes.

Until recently UGVs normally operated under the control of an operator who either used a cable or radio to control it. However, recent advances in robotics and control systems have allowed unattended ground vehicles to operate autonomously. An MSV unattended ground vehicle was key part of the winning team, Team Stella, which recently won the UK MoD’s Grand Challenge Competition to find and autonomous reconnaissance system for use in hostile urban areas.

Unattended Air Vehicles

There is no doubt that Unattended Air Vehicles have changed the complexion of the modern battlefield. MSV is heavily involved in Unattended Air Vehicles both in the provision of the Unattended Air Vehicles themselves and in the ground control stations that control the system and monitor their sensors.

For the actual Unattended Air Vehicles themselves MSV has been heavily involved in two programmes LCLC and Team LM. The latter of these two have been selected to deliver a loitering munition for the UK MoD and MSV’s Capability Development arm MSDG is an active part of the delivery team.

Equally important to the success of Unattended Air Vehicles is the ground control environment. MSV has a long association with the Ground Control Station element of Unattended Air Vehicles. MSV was involved in the ground environment for Team LM. However MSV has also been heavily involved in providing ground and vehicle based control stations for the UK Watchkeeper, BAE Herti and - although not an Unattended Air Vehicle - the ASTOR programme, which fulfils a similar function of battlefield surveillance and intelligence collation and reporting.

MoD’s Grand Challenge was to carry out autonomous recon of a potentially hostile area without risking soldiers lives.

MSV was responsible for the air vehicle design and manufacture for the Team LM Fire Shadow prototype.

Marshall SV’s SCOUT UGV designed and produced by MSV’s subsidiary MSDG is in service in the UK.

A number of UAVs use MSV integrated ground control stations as part of the system.

The Mod use the Marshall SV to extract bombs for under ground whilst being operated from a safe distance.
