Successful Acceptance of Combat Training Center
22 January 2003 10:09
On 22 January 2003 the German Combat Training Center „Gefechtsübungszentrum Heer“ (GÜZ) has been accepted by the contracting authorities BWB (Federal Office of Defense Technology and Procurement) at Altmark near Magdeburg.
Following successful testing, the acceptance papers in accordance with the contract for system activities during the construction phase were signed by the project manager Jürgen von Piechowski on behalf of the BWB and by the spokesman of the industrial consortium Ulrich Sasse in the auditorium of the Combat Training Center.
The world's most advanced Combat Training Center on battalion level has been built by a consortium consisting of STN ATLAS Elektronik GmbH, acting as spokesman of the consortium, and the companies EADS/Dornier GmbH and Diehl Stiftung & Co.
A core system consisting of the first version of such a Combat Training Center allowing up to 800 players to participate in exercises of reinforced troops was handed over to the German Army in August 1997. After the successful completion of service tests, the Combat Training Center GÜZ was then extended to full capacity and has been used for combat exercises since the end of 2001. The complete system which has now been accepted allows the battlefield training of up to 2,500 players within the scope of a reinforced combat battalion.
By simulating direct and indirect firing, and by simulating the threat from mines and N/C materials, a Combat Training Center of this type creates an extremely realistic impression of the battlefield. The possibilities of hitting a target with laser direct fire weapon effects simulators or area fire simulation or of being hit are nearly the same as in real combat. All actions and results in the battlefield are presented and evaluated online in an exercise control center.
Training in the GÜZ delivers the basis for a realistic training and allows an objective and immediate evaluation of exercises. After-exercise reviews are prepared with a special software in order to give players the necessary feedback. This shows each individual participant where there is scope for improvement and identifies the effect of individual decisions on the course of the combat exercise. The main emphasis here is to qualify military leaders, also for new and future tasks of the German Army.
The Combat Training Center will significantly improve the training and mission readiness of soldiers, and especially also of command personnel. Training in the Combat Training Center will give them more confidence in their own capabilities and those of the weapon systems, and improve the survivability in future missions.
