ELTAM: Closed-Combat-Tactical-Simulator

22 August 2002 11:34

The Swiss Army has inaugurated an advanced Electronic Tactical Simulator for Mechanised Troops (ELTAM) developed by Bremen-based STN ATLAS Elektronik’s Simulation Division as general contractor. It is one of the world’s most sophisticated indoor simulation system designed for armed combat tactical training on batallion level. STN ATLAS Elektronik is a subsidiary of Rheinmetall DeTec, Ratingen/Germany.

The contract for the system, worth 40 million Euros, was originally awarded in 1999 following earlier delivery of a core-system for Army troop trials and later approval by the Swiss Parliament under its 1999 Arms Program.

The complete ELTAM system was formally handed-over to the Swiss Army at Thun on 21 June 2002. The handing-over ceremony coincided with the award of a further contract to STN ATLAS Elektronik for development of the Army’s ELSA project covering the new armoured infantry fighting vehicle for the Swiss Army, the forward observer vehicle and the retrofitted MBT Leopard 2. STN ATLAS is speaker of a consortium which includes Sintro Electronics AG of Switzerland.
