Specialist Mobility Training - Off Road Driving and Vehicle Maintenance Training

Specialist Mobility Training (SMT) is based in Hereford, UK, and specialises in off road driver training and maintainer courses. Currently one of the contracts that SMT holds is with the MoD to support the new British military vehicle, the Jackal, in both driver and maintainer courses.

Our instructors and vehicle mechanics work within the UK and abroad in operational and non-operational areas. The depth of knowledge within SMT has been gained from many years of working with military and special forces from all over the world. All SMT driving staff hold a National Proficiency Tests Council (NPTC) City in Guilds qualification at either assessor or operator level and have received out of reach medical training.

SMT works very closely with manufacturers of commercial and specialist vehicles to offer consultancy and training. We recognise the need for a flexible, tailored and quality approach in order to maintain effective training.

Off road driver training

SMT offers advanced off road driving training to military brigades during pre-deployment training prior to going on operations with the new Jackal vehicle. Our hand picked team provides training solutions to military and civilian organisations, and our training packages can be executed at any location worldwide.

SMT also conducts off road driver training in civilian 4x4s to enable students to gain the necessary skills required. Our instructors are able to additionally qualify the students with a NPTC qualification. The depth of experience offered by our instructors range from working within the Arctic Circle on Skidoos to trials on ATVs, armoured vehicle systems and generic 4x4 vehicles.

Maintainer course

In conjunction with driver training with the Jackal vehicle, SMT also conducts an in-depth ten-day maintainer course for the British Army prior to a brigade’s deployment on operations. During this course military students cover the following areas:

• Sub systems
• Operating systems
• Complete equipment schedule (CES)
• Road driving
• Off road driving
• Off road night driving including night vision goggles (NVG)

Worldwide deployable vehicle mechanics

SMT has vehicle mechanics deployed long term on operations for the MoD in support of the Jackal vehicle as field service reps (FSRs). We have dedicated teams of FSRs being deployed on a regular basis to provide service and repair to Jackal vehicles on operations and with the UK special forces training fleet worldwide. All SMT mechanics are qualified to City and Guilds Military Class 1 and VOSA standards.

Logistic and maintenance support

In support of the MOD, SMT has been contracted to procure spares internationally for the UKSF operational and training medium support vehicle (MSV). The company provides rapid response and logistical support worldwide for the MoD. The company has also produced an indepth maintenance handbook for the MoD for the Jackal vehicle, which is being rolled out to the British army as part of maintenance training. .

Consultancy, trials and development

SMT has been heavily involved with consultancy with the UK’s leading manufactures of military high mobility vehicles and has worked closely alongside MoD project teams with design reviews and safety.

SMT can offer trials and development services on a range of products to suit the needs of the client.

A previous project was the design of an off road driving circuit for a manufacturer of a high mobility specialist vehicle.
