RUAG Electronics

Major Contract from France for RUAG Electronics

07 March 2005 10:53

The Simulation & Training Division of RUAG Electronics, partnered by the French company GAVAP, has won a tender by the French Direction Générale de l’armement (DGA) to supply a total of 4,300 weapon laser firing simulators and associated man worn harness sensor equipment for the French Army. This contract marks RUAG’s breakthrough into the French simulation market.

The contract, worth more than € 17 million, is one of the largest awarded in Europe in recent years for the training of infantry using laser fire simulators. RUAG and GAVAP beat strong international competition to win the contract, competition which included the traditional simulation suppliers to the French Army. DGA found the technical advantages of the baseline SIMLAS technology offered by RUAG particularly compelling.

The French project entitled “STC AL-NG” (“Simulateur de Tir de Combat Armes Légères - Nouvelle Génération”) includes the supply of jackets equipped with laser sensors, head-mounted units and laser small arms transmitters (SAT’s) for various kinds of infantry weapons, ranging from assault rifles to sniper rifles. This simulation system will enable the French Army to provide soldiers with basic training in the tactical use of infantry weapons but it can also be fully integrated into the Army’s CENTAC instrumented Combat Training Centre and the future CENZUB Urban Operations Training facilities. The effects of combat (wounding, NBC and AWES events, building damage etc) can be realistically simulated to reflect typical effects of a variety of combat missions. The simulation system and associated after-action review (AAR) software also allow an efficient and speedy evaluation of the results of training exercises.

Initial customer trials will begin later this year. The equipment will then be delivered in batches starting in 2006, with deliveries being completed in 2008. RUAG’s partner, GAVAP will be responsible for system integration and associated in-service support.
