RUAG to Manufacture 288 Laser Fire Simulators

15 September 2003 16:18

RUAG ELECTRONICS to manufacture 288 laser fire simulators for the Radschützenpanzer 93, a light armoured vehicle (LAV), for the Swiss Armed Forces.

The contract involves the manufacture and delivery of laser simulators for the Rad Spz 93. The deliveries will be supplemented by additional training equipment such as analysis computers and field observer controller devices. Following a thorough preparation of the series, the first simulators will begin leaving the factory at the start of the second quarter of 2004. The deliveries will be sent out in a total of ten batches, the final one to be completed by the end of 2006.

The LASSIM Rad Spz 93 is based on the standard product COSIM ® and simulates the 12.7mm machine gun. This two-way system is part of the SIM machine gun/machine cannon programme. Together with the LASSIM Spz 2000 (the Swiss CV9030 version), it supplements the SIM System families the Swiss Armed Forces already have in use for machine guns and machine cannons as part of its overall SIMUG project (“Simulation Support for Combat Training”)

The LASSIM Rad Spz 93 is employed in the firing training (basic training) and in combat training. It is used in engagement with other simulators at the combat training centres of the Swiss Armed Forces.

When “in combat” with another simulator, the simulation system responds with a vehicle-specific vulnerability model. In the process, the effects of combat are transferred to the crew room. Infantry participants also sustain the same “wounds” if the fire was effective as they would in an actual engagement.

The efficiency of machine gun training can be considerably enhanced by the features of these laser simulators without a single real shot being fired. This creates dramatic savings for the armed forces every year. Moreover, the training with laser simulators does not have the adverse impact on the environment that real gun fire does.

This contract is the largest ever in the history of RUAG ELECTRONICS. It is being carried out together with C.O.E.L. The two companies have established a close and reliable cooperative partnership in the demanding live simulation segment. Both have played an instrumental role since 1996 in developing these simulation programmes for the Swiss Armed Forces.

The Bern-based RUAG ELECTRONICS is a subsidiary of RUAG Holding. It is heavily involved in the simulation and training programmes and thus in the enhancement of the training efficiency of the Swiss Armed Forces. The Swiss Armed Forces are among the leading and most highly respected users in the world in simulation-based training.
