RUAG Electronics’ CODARTS was Awarded for the Foreign Comparative Testing (FCT) Program
12 September 2002 16:02
The US Department of Defense has selected 27 new start projects and 13 continuing projects to receive fiscal year 2003 funding under the Foreign Comparative Testing (FCT) Program. One of the new projects is RUAG Electronics’ Combat Training Center (CTC) CODARTS.
This project will evaluate mobile range instrumentation systems developed by RUAG Electronics’ Simulation & Training division to meet U.S. Marine Corps requirements to integrate current training devices which provide deployable force-on-force training for the Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF).
The U.S. Marine Corps became interested in the RUAG Electronics CODARTS-based combat training system after observing this newly developed, realistic training system in actual Swiss Army field exercises. In particular, the Marine Corps selected RUAG Electronics because of the following features of the CODARTS technology:
- The system is fully mobile and could accompany Marine units on deployments around the world
- It can easily integrate existing simulators (MILES) in the Marine Corps inventory and introduce new simulators over time
- CODARTS uniquely integrates the explosion effects of mortar and artillery indirect fire into the training exercise
The contract with RUAG Electronics will be signed in the next few months, with Marines to train with CODARTS equipment at Quantico Marine Base in Virginia in late summer 2003. In subsequent phases, the plan is to move the system to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and Camp Pendleton, California, to show its ability for rapid deployment and setup at other locations. The basic CODARTS technology also makes it possible to introduce realistic ship-to-shore gun fire support during amphibious operations, which may be a future addition to the system for the U.S. Navy and Marines.
The FCT Program's principal objective is to support the warfighter by leveraging non-developmental items of allied and friendly nations to satisfy U.S. defense requirements more quickly and economically.
RUAG Electronics’ Simulation & Training division is a part of the RUAG Holding with more than 4100 employees and annual sales in excess of $750 millions. (2001)
