New Development at TSS: Next Generation Heavy Duty Wheels

Thursday, September 22, 2011 by TSS

Approximately two years ago, the market of armoured vehicles was introduced to TSS' Heavy Duty Wheels. The unique design combined a 1.500kg payload, runflat performance and enough room for heavy-duty brake upgrades, which are normally too big for 18 inch wheels.

In sync with developments in the market, ever-increasing weights of armoured vehicles have inspired TSS International to raise the bar and develop the next generation of 18 inch Heavy Duty Wheels, with a TüV-approved payload of 1.800kg per wheel. These one-piece Heavy Duty Wheels are Rodgard Runflat Ready, ensuring a runflat assembly not yet seen in the industry. TSS has closely collaborated with Rodgard to design the custom made APX runflat system (patent pending) especially for this wheel. Rodgard and TSS have been working together for the past 30 years and have provided many armoured vehicles worldwide with runflat systems that give up to 150 kilometres (compliant with FINABEL specifications) of extended mobility with flat tyres.

Furthermore, TSS has also worked closely with American high performance brake experts StopTech™ to have a Big Brake Kit™ designed for these vehicles, which fits into the 18 inch powerhouse wheel to ensure TSS' goal of providing the best mobility possible in the toughest of conditions. Shorter stopping distance, better pedal feel, less frequent maintenance compared to original unmodified brakes and better brake cooling thanks to the patented AeroRotor® design all make StopTech™ Big Brake Kits™ the best choice for brake upgrades on any luxury armoured vehicle.

Already, numerous armoured vehicles, among others the Landcruiser 200, have been equipped with the combination of TSS Heavy Duty Wheel assemblies (ready-to-fit wheel/tyre/runflat) and StopTech™ Big Brake Kits™.

Now it is possible to drive (and stop) a B6 or B7 armoured Landcruiser, G-Wagen, S-class, Touareg, Range Rover, Pajero, Suburban, Defender, Patrol (and many more) on non-military wheels, and still have the security of being able to keep driving on flat tyres if necessary.

Armour Mobility

The continuing development of the TSS Heavy Duty Wheels is just a part of the commitment to be your vehicle security expert. The slogan 'Armour Mobility' shows how important TSS believes a vehicle's mobility is. TSS strives to provide mobility for your armour, and also to protect that mobility ('armour' it), because any vehicle that is standing still is near useless, whether it is armoured or not.

Building further upon more than 30 years of experience in vehicle mobility solutions, TSS offers a multitude of innovative products: Runflat systems, Brake Upgrades, Protected Fuel Tanks, 2-Piece Wheels with Internal Bead Locks, Central Tyre Inflation Systems, Vehicle Intercoms, Under-Car Bomb Detection: they all add to keeping a vehicle moving and/or its passengers safe and secure.

One of the pillars of the TSS product range is the TSS ProtecTank® Fuel System Protection. The result of many years of research and development protects the fuel tank of an armoured vehicle against explosion, leakage and fire. The unique characteristic of TSS ProtecTank® is that it uses the OEM fuel tank which is already fitted in the car, so no modifications have to be made to the chassis. Also, TSS ProtecTank® offers a big weight saving in comparison to surrounding the fuel tank with armour: the TSS ProtecTank® treatment is up to 90% lighter than steel protection.

CarVox communication systems allow driver and passengers of a vehicle to communicate safely and securely with people on the outside of the vehicle, without opening any doors or windows. Checkpoints and roadblocks can now be safely tackled from within the safety of your armour. Options include a handheld microphone unit, siren (yelp/wail), PA function and numerous variations for different vehicle types, such as cash in transit, limousine, prisoner transportation and many more applications.

All in all, TSS International is your number one, all-round partner when it comes to armour mobility.
