A new multi-purpose night vision monocular (MPNVM) was revealed by Theon Sensors during Defendory International 2008 in Athens, Greece. The monocular is the latest addition to Theon Sensors product portfolio and its development was performed in house by company’s own resources.
“Since late 2007, we have undertaken an intensive R&D programme in order to design and manufacture the MPNVM, and we are delighted to be able to introduce a full MIL SPEC (military specification) device to the international market,” said Dr. Thomas Dakos, Theon Sensors' vice president and head of technology.
He added: “The monocular will blend nicely with our current range of night vision products, which includes weapon sights and driver’s viewers, thus giving Theon Sensors the opportunity to fulfil existing market demand for acquisition and use of monocular systems.”
The MPNVM is a 1X monocular with 40º field of view. It can be hand-held, mounted to a small arms Picatinny (MIL-STD-1913) mounting rail, or attached to a head or helmet mount. It can be used to assist tactical movement and for weapon firing (mounted behind a red dot sight), short range surveillance, maintenance work, map reading and medical aid.
The MPNVM employs an 18mm image intensifier, which has high photoresponse, high resolution (64lp/mm minimum), high signal-to-noise ratio, auto-gating power supply and variable gain for optimum performance in varying night lighting conditions. The monocular measures 109mm x 61mm x 70mm and weighs less than 350g, due to the extensive use of high strength engineering plastics and optimized high-performance miniature optics.
The primary power source for the monocular is a single, 3V, CR123 lithium battery. A yellow indicator, at the edge of the field of view, flashes when the CR123 battery’s energy level is reduced to 1.1V. In addition, an adaptor is provided to use a commercial AA size battery. A complete range of accessories, including magnifiers, weapon, head and helmet mounts, will be offered with the monocular.
