Saab - Sensor Systems

Saab Microwave Systems is a leading provider of sensor systems, encompassing advanced airborne, ground-based and naval radar, as well as an extensive range of services. Saab has the power and technology to help you achieve information superiority 24/7/365.

If you are first to know, you can be first to act. Our robust, interoperable, cost-efficient and future-proof sensor systems give you that capacity.

MICROWAVE AND ANTENNA RADAR TECHNOLOGY

With more than 50 years of experience in radar development we are today a world-leading competence centre for microwave and antenna technology. Over the years more than 3,000 sensors have been delivered worldwide and today our products are operational in more than 30 countries.

ARTHUR – WEAPON LOCATING SYSTEM

The ARTillery HUnting Radar (ARTHUR) was developed to perform as the core element of a brigade or division level counter battery sensor system. The ability to suppress the enemy artillery together with a highly developed air-defence capability maintains freedom of manoeuvre on the battlefield.

ARTHUR is just as useful in surveillance of a peace treaty in a peace support operation as it is in an active counter-battery operation. The tactical flexibility of ARTHUR allows it to be a stand-alone medium range WLR or a long-range weapon locating system, consisting of two to four radars working in co-ordination. This versatility enables the system to maintain constant surveillance of an area of interest in a highly mobile and fragmented battlefield.

ARTHUR is in full-scale series production, and the system is continuously improved based on the feedback from our customers.

GIRAFFE AMB – MULTI-MISSION SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM

Now in full-scale series production, the Saab Giraffe Agile Multi-Beam (AMB) air defence search radar is the latest in true 3D radar technology. The new Giraffe AMB has the capability to act as a multi-mission radar system with simultaneous:

  • Air and sea surveillance
  • Ground-Based Air Defence (GBAD)
  • Military Air Traffic Control (ATC)
  • 360° ballistic weapon tracking and locating

Tailored for operations with medium and short-range surface-to-air missile systems, the GIRAFFE AMB includes an integrated C3 system, enabling it to act as the command-and-control centre for air defence and military air traffic. It can simultaneously be integrated into a cluster of netted GIRAFFE systems, providing outstanding radar co-operation.

ROCKET, ARTILLERY AND MORTAR DETECTION AND TRACKING

The Giraffe AMB design is perfectly suited for the detection and tracking of Rocket, Artillery and Mortar (RAM) projectiles. Together with the proven ARTHUR software, this is used for the counter-RAM function. Through its 360° coverage, it will pinpoint the weapon position as well as predict the impact point well in advance of impact.

The GIRAFFE AMB is housed in a single 6m (20ft) ISO container mounted on a cross-country truck, offering high mobility, a deployment time of only ten minutes and a teardown time of three minutes. The cabin has splinter and NBC protection. With air transportation with C-130, it is worldwide deployable in variable climate zones.

Unlike conventional 3D search radars that rely on elevation scanning technology, the Giraffe AMB covers a large elevation range simultaneously by using one wide beam for transmission, and multiple digitally shaped narrow beams for reception.

This multi-beam antenna concept provides not only superior altitude coverage but, in particular, an unparalleled 3D-target updates rate of one each second, effectively maintaining the inherently high rate of a 2D system.

All targets within the elevation envelope are determined using monopulse techniques, thus ensuring high-quality 3D target data. The maintained pulse density ensures high clutter suppression in adverse weather conditions. Instrumented range extends to 180km.

Antenna side lobes are ultra-low, which, combined with pulse-to-pulse and burst-to-burst frequency agility, give the Giraffe AMB outstanding jamming resistance.

HARD 3D SEARCH AND ACQUISITION RADAR

HARD is a 3D search and acquisition radar specially designed to be a 'silent radar' in SHOrt-Range Air Defence Missile Systems (SHORADMS). The HARD is a solid-state radar electronically controlled in elevation, and operates in the X-band. The radar can be integrated in weapon systems and netted by a C3I system at battery level. Small size and low weight make it easy to integrate into all types of vehicles. HARD radars are in use in different SHORADMS systems within Europe.
